Twickenham Church by Sir Francis Seymour Haden

This is one of Haden's most famous etchings. It is signed in the plate lower left and dated. Different sources list the date as 1862 or 1865. I tend to think it's 1862, and the confusion comes from a horizontal mark that looks to make it look like a five. It's a wonderfully composed image with a thicket of reeds and trees in the foreground (emphasized by the thick burr of the drypoint). There is a shadowy figure in the lower center of the image, reflected in the river. In the center background is Twickenham, with the church placed at the center of the image. A classic print that demonstrates that Whistler's brother-in-law was no slouch as an artist.
