Landscape by Burt Stanly Hasen

This is an brilliant abstract painting by Burt Stanly Hasen. Hasen is an American painter who was born in 1921 and died in 2007. He was born in New York City. He studied at the Art Students League prior to World War II, before serving in the war where he worked on aerial maps in the Pacific theater. The influence of this work can be seen in his fine art. Upon his return he resumed studies at the League studying with luminary American painters George Bridgeman, Frank Vincent Dumond, and Will Barnet. He continued his studies with Hans Hofmann before going to Paris where he had his first solo exhibit in 1950. While many of his paintings (including this one) pay homage to abstract expressionism, he showed a much broader range of subjects. He had many solo and group shows in New York in the 1950s and 60s. He has received many awards most notably a a Fulbright grant to Rome in 1959 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship Award, and the Benjamin Altman Award from the National Academy of Design. He taught at the School of Visual Arts for nearly 50 years. His work is represented in the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, and the National Academy of Design.
