Ponte de Ferro by Renzo Vespignani

This is a lithograph issued by the Associated American Artists of noted Italian modernist Renzo Vespignani. Well known in Italy, he rarely traveled. This image is one he created for AAA although the location is unspecified. The AAA certificate gives the title as Steel Bridge, although the literal translation of the Italian is Bridge of Iron. If also seen this print titled Perriferia, which despite the misspelling would translate as Periphery, which seems unlikely. This is a dynamic image which bold lines giving it a heavy, almost ominous feel. Splashes of muted color create energy and direct the eye around the image. In my opinion this is the best work by the artist I have seen.
The image is sharp without fading, discoloration or staining. Unfortunately, the edges of the sheet have been folded under. This was done some time ago, as the edges show some toning. Fortunately, this does not impact the image at all. I have lowered the price to reflect the folding of the sheet.
Renzo Vespignani (1924-2001) was an Italian painter, printmaker and illustrator. He illustrated many works and was an influential thought leader as co-founder of the magazine Citta Aperta (Open City) and as the founder of the Italian neorealist group II Pro e II Contro (Pro and Con). He was a four time participant in the Venice Biennale and exhibited across Italy, although rarely outside the country. He did two editions of work inspired by a visit to New York City, Manhattan Transfer and An Afternoon in Chelsea.
