Aerialist by Georges Schreiber

This is a lithograph of a circus performer by American artist Georges Schreiber. The circus was a favorite subject of Schreiber and he created many images of performers. They are rendered in an abstract style that focuses on the energy and excitement of the performance. This is a particularly interesting piece in that the major focus of the piece is the large net apparently seen from above. The aerialist is almost an afterthought well to the right of the image (interestingly not over the net, at least from the vantage point of the viewer. There is a nod to Cubism with the geometric shapes and the dramatic flattening of perspective. It is rendered in black and white and is signed Schreiber in pencil lower right. The piece is in perfect condition with no fading or paper issues. This is likely an edition from Associated American Artists which printed many works by Schreiber. If this is the case, then the edition size is probably between 100-250.
Georges Schreiber (1904 - 1977) George Schreiber was born in Belgium in 1904. After studying extensively in Europe, he moved to New York in 1928. Schreiber‘s work went through three distinct styles. He initially produced images in the style of Art Deco resulting in several awards. He then began to produce works consistent with the style of regionalist artist such as Benton and Curry. He then began to develop a much more original and personal style consistent with the modern art movement. While incorporating more modern approaches, he never left representational images. He was drawn to images from the circus and music in particular. His work in held by most major museums.
