August Showers by Douglas Gorsline

This is an etching by American artist Douglas Gorsline. It shows a summer thunderstorm moving across the landscape. It is just about to cover the sun which adds some crepuscular rays to the right side of the image. A deserted road frames the lower left of the image, with a fence serving a similar purpose on the right. There is excellent use of chiaroscuro adding drama to the scene. It is a crisp well-inked impression in pristine condition. No issues with the paper which has full margins. It is signed and dated in pencil lower right and titled lower left.
Douglas Gorsline (1913–1985) is an American artist best known as a painter and writer but was also an accomplished printmaker. Originally from upstate New York, he initially studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology, before studying art at Yale and the Art Students League. He listed Marcel Duchamp as one of his major influences and strove in his art to merge elements of realism and cubism. His most important contribution was to inject movement into the work, an idea he shared with Duchamp (think of the famous Nude Descending a Staircase). His prints tend to be more realistic and representational.
He taught for many years at the New York Academy of Design, being elected a full Academician, before moving to France in the 1960s where he spent the remainder of his life. He was the first American artist to be invited to China to paint and discuss art (1973). There is a museum devoted to his work and life in Bussy-le-Grand, France. His work is held by the Smithsonian Institution American Art Museum, the Library of Congress, the Carnegie Institute, the Corcoran Art Gallery, and the Chicago Art Institute. His papers are held at the McCain Library and Archives at the University of Southern Mississippi.
