Opening the Road by Eloise Howard

This is a wood engraving by Eloise Howard. It shows a pair of horses pulling a wooden plow to clear a path to a log home. The snow is thick and drifted. A snow covered tree dominates the center of the image. Between the active sky, the vastness of the land, the snow, and the diminutive buildings and figures, one comes away with the sense of our place in the natural world. Still, we try to control it as best we can. This was printed by the American Artists Group in New York. The edition size is unknown. It is signed and dated in the block lower left. The print is in excellent condition with the exception of a stain in the lower right just below the man holding the reigns. This could be restored by a good paper conservator. The price reflects the damage. The original label from the American Artists Group is included.
