MacDaniel's Barn by Andrew Vargish

This is a drypoint etching by American artist Andrew Vargish. It shows the interior of a barn. It is a great demonstration of the art of chiaroscuro (light and dark). Vargish takes a scene predominantly in shadow, but uses light from windows to highlight aspects of the scene, much like a lighting designer on the stage. He uses perspective to create a vanishing point that a silhouetted figure is headed towards. As he leaves, we faintly see another figure emerging from the shadows at the lower right. She is feeding some excited chickens. More chickens are entering from the left to get dinner. A few pigeons are also taking advantage. A very interesting composition. This piece is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The etching is in beautiful condition. It is printed on cream paper which adds warmth to the scene. It is well struck with excellent inking. It is signed and dated in the plate upper right and signed in pencil lower right.
