Buddleia and Papillon by Bernard Cathelin

This is a bold floral lithograph by noted French artist Bernard Cathelin. It features the red spiky blossoms of Buddleia (Butterfly Bush) which are attracting Swallowtail Butterflies. It features the bold colors and movement that his art is noted for. It is from a portfolio of 20 prints, L Intelligence des fleurs. Maurice Maeterlinck ed. Michèle Trinckvel 1988. The edition size is 50 and it is unsigned. The lithograph is in superb condition with bright colors and no evidence of fading. The sheet is printed to the edge. The paper is in excellent condition. A fine piece by this famous artist.
Bernard Cathelin (1919-2004) Bernard Cathelin was an acclaimed French artist. He was a prolific painter and lithographer who left a large body of fine work. He studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs under Maurice Brianchon. He was a member of the School of Paris. He began attracting notice as a student and was well known by the mid-1950s. He has exhibited all over the world. He has received many awards including the Blumenthal prize (1950), the Emily Loewe Prize (1953), and the Othon Friesz Prize (1958). He was elected to the Legion of Honour, the highest order of merit in France in 1995. His skill as a printmaker was recognized early on when Matisse selected Cathelin to produce a lithographic poster based on the Nattier portrait of Mme de Pompadour. There have been two major retrospective exhibits of his work, at the Musée de Valence in 1997 and the Shanghai Art Museum in China in 2000. His work is noted for its bold colors, energy, and abstraction.
