Dance to A Secret Song by Jean Schonwalter

This is a lithograph by Jean Frances Schonwalter. It is from a portfolio of work by New Jersey artists published in 1968. This is very typical of her graphic work. Her subjects were usually human figures, depicted in unusual activities. The meaning is ambiguous, as the title suggests. A male figure occupies the foreground and is dancing with a scarf in one hand and a smiling face in the other (one hopes it is a mask). The dancer is looking away from the viewer and does indeed appear to be listening to a secret song. A huddle of other unidentified figures is in the lower right. Another example of this lithograph is held in the Princeton University Art Museum.
The lithograph is in perfect condition. It is signed in pencil lower right, titled lower left and the edition is in the lower center 178/200. Her work is very sought after.
