Lightening by Richard Florsheim
Lightening is a color lithograph created in 1970 as part of the Illuminations portfolio. In contrast to others that are more colorful, this is quite muted, almost monochromatic. The image features the silhouette of a city, dominated by roiling clouds. This is very characteristic of his work from the 1970s.
Richard A. Florsheim (1916-1979) is one of the great American printmakers of the 20th century. He worked in virtually all media, but clearly favored lithography. He is quoted as saying, "Lithography is my favorite print medium. As I am a painter with a pretty direct approach, the forthright orthographic quality of the lithograph appeals to me...I prefer stone as a drawing surface. There is no substitute for the responsive, flat, tempting, velvety surface of a good gray stone." He primarily worked in Chicago, but summered in Provincetown on Cape Cod (where this piece was likely conceived). Florsheim uses unusual perspective with heightened horizontal and particularly vertical lines which gives the art a very modern perspective.
Richard A. Florsheim was a full member of the American Graphic Artists, the Audubon Artists, the Artists Equity Association and the prestigious National Academy of Design. During his career he received such major conferments as the Art Institute of Chicago Award (1946), the Pennell Fund Award (1950) and the Library of Congress Award (1956). His original lithographs and paintings are included in numerous public museums in America, Britain, France and Germany.
