Southern Dwellers by Charles Battaglini

Charles Battaglini 1942-2020 (Information taken from his online obituary) Charles Battaglini lived his entire life in Western Pennsylvania. He taught middle school in Johnstown, PA before teaching art for all grades at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) University School. He ultimately joined the art faculty at IUP where he was a revered teacher and art educator. His artistic output was prolific and covered all artistic media. He was probably best known as a printmaker with work exhibited in many shows including the National Academy of Design NY/NY, Seattle Print International, Wadsworth Athenium, CT, Boston Printmakers 31st National Exhibition, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Museum. His work won several awards including The Print Club, Philadelphia, Bradley University, Peoria, IL, Charlotte Printmakers, NC, Georgia State University, Atlanta, and the Dulin Gallery, Knoxville, TN.
This work is from his Italian series. Little information is available on this series, but it probably dates to the 1980s where he taught in an IUP summer program in Florence, Italy. These are relief (or intaglio) prints, although the exact printing technique was not specified. The works are abstract with bold colors and geometric shapes providing a very modern aesthetic. The series is printed on a thin paper and the works are signed in pencil lower right, titled lower center, and the edition is given lower left. The run was small with the edition size given as 14. These are dramatic works that would provide a dynamic focal point for the space.
