The Old Barn by Martin Levine

This is a lithograph titled The Old Barn by New York artist Martin Levine. The image is dominated by one wall of a dilapidated wooden barn. The artist does a masterful job of conveying the different textures of the surfaces in the image such as the wooden boards, the stones of a culvert lower left, and the bricks of the chimney. Levine is noted for his attention to details of texture and whether he is using lithography or etching, he is able to depict the fine details as well as any. He also uses light and shadow effectively, particularly with the glimpses into the interior of the barn. This was created in 1980 for the Associated American Artists. There are examples that are hand-colored, but the original image is monochromatic. The piece is in excellent condition. It has been examined prior to being placed in the current frame. There is no toning, staining, fading, foxing, paper tears or losses. It is archivally framed and matted in an Arts and Crafts style frame. The image size is given above. The framed size is 16.5 x 22 x 1.5 inches. Levine's work hearkens back to the early 20th century, evoking the realists and AshCan school.
