Figure in Red by Georges Dussau

This is an etching by noted French printmaker Georges Dussau. It is titled Figure in Red. It is done in a dramatic abstract style. A figure is present in the center of the image with arms bisecting the top and bottom creating 4 quadrants. The legs are attenuated and cartoonish. The figure is presumably a nude female, although significant imagination is required (and frankly without the clue in the title it's not obvious). The ground of the image is composed of innumerable doodles. One figure (reminds me of a trilobite) occurs once in each quadrant. The corners of the image are anchored by bold Xs, and the edge is framed with arrows. It's an extremely dynamic piece, and an incredible achievement as an etching. The plate size is given above. The sheet is unframed and is 20 x 26 inches. It is signed in pencil lower right (Dussau's signature is illegible, but recognizable to those familiar with his work. The edition is given in pencil lower left 25/50. It is in pristine condition with no fading, stains, tears, paper loss or other issues. This is a somewhat atypical work for Dussau in that most of his work is purely abstract with geometric elements. However it is a tour de force of the etcher's art and demonstrates Dussau's mastery of the medium.

The artist Georges Dussau was born on March 14 1947, Birth Chalon-sur-Saone, France. He is a prolific modern artist who works in most media. He has exhibited in galleries internationally and has work in many private and public collections. His work comes up for auction frequently, although there is little biographic information available.
