Towers (or Pilings) by Richard Florsheim

Richard A. Florsheim 1916-1979 A prominent twentieth century American printmaker, painter, sculptor, educator and writer, Florsheim first studied at the University of Chicago before going to New York to study at the Museum of Modern Art and at the Metropolitan Museum, under Aaron Bohrod. His education was completed in Paris at the Musee Nationale dArt Moderne. Richard Florsheim gained international recognition in the late 1930s when he first began exhibiting his art at such major institutions as the Salon des Refuses Paris, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Art. During the following years his original prints and paintings were shown at numerous public galleries both in the United States and in Europe.
Richard A. Florsheim was a full member of the American Graphic Artists, the Audubon Artists, the Artists Equity Association and the prestigious National Academy of Design. During his career he received such major conferments as the Art Institute of Chicago Award (1946), the Pennell Fund Award (1950) and the Library of Congress Award (1956). His original lithographs and paintings are included in numerous public museums in America, Britain, France and Germany.
Towers is a colored lithograph that displays the hallmarks of Florsheim altered perspective, abstraction, and contrast. It depicts modernistic skyscrapers in a tall compressed perspective. This could be a cover for a futuristic science fiction novel or film poster. Closer inspection leads the viewer to raise questions as to whether these are skyscrapers, or merely wooden piles (some splintered) backlit by the setting sun. Waterfront scenes are another favorite subject for Florsheim. The ambiguity of the image and title adds mystery to the work. The image size is given above. The sheet size is 19.75 x 24.5 inches. It is pencil signed by the artist lower right and there is a pencil notation of the edition 2/38 lower left. The title of the piece (and the original price) is at the lower margin of the sheet in pencil. The lithograph is in very good condition with no paper damage, tears, or fading. There is a thin rim of mat burn present and some residual hinge tape at the very bottom of the sheet. The image itself is sharp with vivid colors. A great example of his work.
