The Quarry No. 2 by Albert W. Barker

This is a lithograph by noted American artist Albert Barker. The piece depicts workers loading rock into a horse-drawn cart. However, the focal point of the work is the massive rock wall of the quarry. The strong diagonals seem to squeeze the light out of the image and overshadows (literally and figuratively) the workers. Indeed the workers seem trapped between the sheer wall and the uplifted floor of the quarry. It is hard not to think of Sisyphus when viewing this image. It's a great piece. It was produced in an edition of 50.

Artist Bio: Albert Barker (1874-1947) was born in Chicago, Illinois and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1890 to 1895. In addition to his art education he received a PhD in Greek archaeology (maybe the Sisyphus idea isn't so weird after all). He settled on a farm in rural Pennsylvania and most of his images depicted the disappearance of this life.
