Homeport by Richard Florsheim
This is a beautiful lithograph titled "Homeport" by Chicago artist Richard Florsheim. It was printed by Associated American Artists who printed most of Florsheim's work. The original label and description is on the back of the frame. The piece depicts one of Florsheim's favorite subjects, boats on the water. He returns to this again and again. He uses his typical tall and narrow perspective to elongate the masts and enhance the reflections in the water--another hallmark. He creates the sense of distance by foreshortening and crowding boats as they populate the horizon backlit by a cloudy sky probably at twilight. He's a master of manipulating light and shadow in his lithographs. A characteristic piece for this artist, although somewhat smaller than many of his works. It is signed in pencil lower right R. A. Florsheim and the edition is given in pencil lower left ed. 240. This is a pretty typical edition for Associated American Artists. The title is on the label on the back. The image is 10 x 14 inches and the frame is 15 x 19 inches. It is in excellent condition, although I've not examined it out of the frame. There is no fading, staining, paper loss, foxing, or other issues with the paper. The backing is not archival. A beautiful piece by an American mid-century master.
