New York by Bernard Buffet

This is a fantastic limited edition lithograph by iconic mid-century artist Bernard Buffet. It is a view of New York City. Buffet is best known for his French scenes, but produced works from all over the world. This is likely from a show in 1967 at the Atelier Mourlot - New York. While a few of the scenes depicted well-known New York landmarks, many of the images featured unfamiliar buildings off the usual tourist path. He also included streets and train tracks providing more of an urban industrial look, perhaps in homage to the Ashcan school, one of the first original artistic movements in the United States. Still they include Buffet's typical style with large blocks of bright colors and bold, dark outlines providing a distinctive geometric pattern that makes his work instantly recognizable. This is a limited edition lithograph signed in pencil lower right. It is marked E. A. (Epreuve d'artiste or artist proof) lower left in pencil. The piece is framed and has not been examined out of the frame. It looks like the materials used are archival, although I can't be certain. The image size is given above. The frame is 23.75 x 31.75 inches. It is in excellent condition and is ready to hang. An outstanding example of Buffet's work.

Bernard Buffet (1928-1999)
Bernard Buffet is one of the best known of French modernists. He was born in Paris, entered the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts at age 15 spending two years there after which he set out on his own. His first exhibition was in 1947 and a piece from that exhibit was purchased for the Paris Museum of Modern Art. He won a prestigious award by the time he was 20 years old. He became extremely popular with collectors but was increasingly estranged from the art establishment of France (which is traditionally very conservative).
Buffet was extremely prolific producing over 8000 paintings and original prints. Technically he is a realist in that his works are representational (still life, architecture, figural) rather than abstract, but he captures much of the energy and apparent haphazardness of the abstract expressionists. His work is instantly recognizable and remains highly collectible. He committed suicide in 1999.
