Toledo by Rudolf Schoofs

This is an abstract etching and aquatint titled "Toledo" (possibly) by German artist Rudolf Schoofs. In addition to the dense etching, Schoofs uses embossing of the paper to enhance the surface and give a three dimensional aspect to the work. The work is done in the abstract expressionist style consistent with its date of 1960. The intense blacks and greys are also consistent with the work of many post-war German artists--bleak and foreboding. The title may not be correct--it is my best reading of the script in pencil lower left. It is signed and dated in pencil lower right. An edition is not given, although Schoofs generally worked in small editions of 25 or less. I've not found another example of this etching. It is in excellent condition, although has not been examined out of the frame. The image is 7.25 x 8.75 inches. It is a fine impression on cream paper. The sheet is untrimmed and is 17.5 x 22 inches. There are no issues including no paper loss, tears, toning, fading, foxing, or soiling. It has not been examined out of the frame. The backing does not appear to be archival. The frame is 19 x 23.5 inches. A very nice example of post-war German abstract art.
