Citadel by Mel Silverman
This is a dramatic woodcut by American artist Mel Silverman. This is an acclaimed piece, as it was chosen by Associated American Artists as the Sponsor Membership Presentation Print for 1962. The woodcut depicts a vast fortress that appears to be built on a hill, although it is ambiguous and could just as well be floating on clouds. It is backlit by a full sun adding drama to the work. The artist uses a tall, narrow perspective to enhance the drama of the piece. It's a great graphic image. It is signed and dated in pencil lower right Mel Silverman 1962. The title and edition are given lower left 61/140 "Citadel". This is a smaller edition than is typical for this publisher. The original Associated American Artists label is on the back. The piece appears to be in very good condition. It is framed and hasn't been examined out of the frame. The mat and backing are not archival. It appears there may be some paper toning under the mat, but well away from the image. The is no fading, foxing, staining, or paper loss. The image size is 9.75 x 18 inches and the frame size is 17.25 x 26 inches. A striking piece.
