Reech by Victor Vaserely

This is an eye-popping Op Art piece by iconic artist Victor Vaserely. It is titled "Reech". It is a classic Vaserely image with warping geometric forms and vivid colors. This piece has a dynamic sense as the two spheres appearing from the top and bottom of the image appear to be deforming the red grid in the middle. More subtly, the artist uses a reversal of the positive and negative grids. In the top half, the structures emphasized the lines--almost like a net, however the bottom half of the piece uses the spaces between the lines as the focus of the image. This is Op Art at its best. Reech is one of Vaserely's most famous images. It was issued in an edition of 200 that was signed and numbered. However, Vaserely worked with EuroArt Vienna and the printer Domberger, Stuttgart to create an unsigned edition of 5000 issued by the Collectors Guild. This example is from that edition. It has the embossed paper markings at the bottom left of Domberger Stuttgart under the edition number 2602/5000. There is also the embossed EuroArt stamp bottom center. The plate image is 24.5 x 24.5 inches and the sheet is 26 x 26 inches. It is framed with the frame size 27.5 x 27.5 inches. The piece has not been examined out of the frame, but it is mounted so the entire piece can be seen. It is in pristine condition with vivid colors and no damage. A spectacular example of Vaserely's work.

Victor Vaserely (1906-1997) is a Hungarian-French artist who essentially invented Op Art with his piece "Zebra" dating back to 1937. Growing up in Hungary, he initially studied medicine before turning to art in the 1920s. His initial studies were in the European academic tradition at the Podolini-Volkmann Academy. His career was transformed when, in the late 1920s he enrolled at Sándor Bortnyik's private art school called Műhely. This was a Hungarian school that was using the approach developed at the Bauhaus to explore more modern concepts of art and design. The curriculum was of necessity practical and emphasized applied graphic art and typographical design. This was a huge influence for Vaserely throughout his life. Indeed, it provided income for him as, after moving to Paris in 1930, he worked extensively on posters and graphic art. In this time period he experimented with textural effects, perspective, shadow, and light and created his first works that incorporated aspects that would later be considered Op Art. After the war, he focused on fine art, experimenting in a number of different styles of the time, none of which provided a satisfying artistic path. He later referred to this time of experimentation as on the wrong track. It was the late 1940s and early 1950s where he developed geometric abstract art, later incorporating optical illusion, a style that would become known as Op Art. This confirmed his place in art history. Today Vaserely's work is held by every institution that has modern art.
