Snow Scene by Asa Cheffetz
This is a wood engraving by American artist Asa Cheffetz. Cheffetz is an acknowledged master of this medium. He worked in New England in the early to mid 20th century. His subject matter represent typical New England landscapes and include villages, churches, lighthouses, and covered bridges. This scene is depicts a village in winter. Snow occupies the lower half of the piece with just a few marks to indicate the rolling terrain. The village roofs are snow-covered and set against dark hills. There is just a hint of light behind the hills suggesting the sun has just set. There is a plowed road entering from the right and its curve is echoed by a thin plume of smoke from a chimney. He masterfully conveys the quiet, tranquil peace of a winter night. A beautiful example of his work.
The image is in pristine condition. It is signed Asa Cheffetz lower right. There are no condition issues, including no fading, staining, foxing, tears, or paper loss. The image itself is 7.5 x 3.25 inches. It is archivally framed and matted (the piece has not been examined out of the frame). The framed size is 15 x 11.5 x 1 inches.
