Estes Park by Philip Cheney

This is a beautiful lithograph of Estes Park, Colorado by noted American Artist Philip Cheney (1897 - 1992). The dramatic clouds emphasize the stark grandeur of the mountains that encircle the city. Near the center of the image is the historic Stanley Hotel--an Estes Park landmark for over 100 years. Cheney uses the road in the foreground to lead the eye directly to the village, while the mountains and clouds funnel the eyes back if they try to look away. A very powerful piece.

Artist Bio: Philip Cheney (1897 - 1992) is a well known American artist. He was born in Massachusetts and mostly worked on the east coast, ultimately dying in Virginia. He is best known as a lithographer. He exhibited extensively during his lifetime and his work is in many major institutions most notably the Detroit Art Institute. He seems to have spent some time in the west in the 1930s, but there is little documentation of this.
