East Utah Headframe by Susan Crawford
This is an oil on canvas by noted Southwestern artist Susan Crawford. It depicts a wooden headframe from Eastern Utah. A headframe is the structural frame above an underground mine. The hoisting pulley is mounted in the frame and it allows ore to be raised from the mine. This is a beautifully composed scene with the frame centered and silhouetted against the sky and clouds. Utah red rock occupies the background. There is a professionally repaired tear just to the left of the frame, which is not apparent except on close inspection. The piece is priced to reflect the damage (Crawford's work generally sells for $700-2200)
Artist Info: (from the artist's website) When I was growing up, my family traveled extensively throughout the more inaccessible parts of the Southwestern United States; camping, exploring, and making lifelong friendships along the way. These experiences so impressed me that I chose Southwestern cultures as my primary field of study at the University of Arizona. Even as I was immersed in Anthropological Studies, I felt a definite tug at my heart every time I walked past the Fine Arts Building on campus.
As first I was satisfied to express myself through handwork; creating interpretations of other culture’s products…their clothing and ornamentation. However, it soon became apparent that I needed to paint. Only through the free flow of pigment would I be able to express the manipulation of design and color that runs through my head thus merging the truth of nature with the imagination of the psyche. While weaving, with its auxiliary supports of spinning and dying, is very satisfying, I also need the quick fix of directly applying color to surface.
My work, as is the rest of my life, can best be described as eclectic. I enjoy working in a variety of mediums and techniques utilizing a multitude of subjects. I leave the interpretation of my work to the viewer’s heart.
